Dreaming of international travel? A U.S. passport is literally your ticket to exploring the world! Did you know that a US passport gives you access to 146 countries? In contrast to a passport from Ghana for example, which would only allow you to explore 44 countries without visa restrictions. Weird benefits of colonialism that Black and Brown folks must absolutely leverage!

Since this is your first time, you’ll have to make an appointment at a post office or library near you that handles passport applications. You can even click ‘Photo Onsite’ to see which spots near you will take your photo!

*A little Note on the Passport Photo:

If your nearest post office can’t take your photos, call ahead to confirm that your local CVS, Walgreens, or Rite Aid can, then head on over

Now, you’ll need to get the following things together to take to your appointment:

1. Get Familiar with Form DS-11: The main passport form for adults and kids! You have a few options here. You can either fill it out when you arrive at your appointment or print it out and then grab a pen to Fill it out. Your choice!

2. Bring Proof of U.S. Citizenship: You’ll need an original or certified copy of your U.S. birth certificate, Consular Report of Birth Abroad, or Certificate of Naturalization. If you don’t know what at least one of those means, ask ya mama or mama like figure!

3. Bring a Valid ID: Have your valid driver’s license, U.S. passport (expired or undamaged), or other Government issued ID ready.

4. Bring Ya Monies: Use the Fee Calculator to determine the total  cost of your passport. In 2023 when this article was written it was $165 split between the $130 passport fee and the $35 execution fee. If you need your passport in less than 2 months you can pay an additional Expedited service fee of $60. Checks and debit cards are accepted.

Some Special Circumstances:

Certain circumstances may require additional documentation, such as for children under 16, lost or stolen passports, owing child support, or changing your gender marker. Refer to the official website for specific instructions.

Now, when you head to the passport acceptance facility for your appointment, the acceptance agent will be able to review your documents, verify your identity, and accept the payments!

After that you’ll wait anywhere from 6-10 weeks for your passport to arrive! Processing times definitely vary so if you are in any kind of a rush and can spare the $60 for expedited I recommend that.

Well there you have it folks! How’d we do? Hopefully now you’re clear on all the steps and all the things you’ll need to get your passport. They make it complicated on purpose but don’t worry you got this!!!
